the whistle came back with him my mother

remembers her mother using it to call them in

at bedtime and for dinner at midday children

whistled under the mountain that took each of them back

children who whistled their children to the same

starting line and then watched them disperse taking

the carved chair the camphor chest the portrait

of the dead first child and the whistle emblems

the young man made or took for his own

after the war my grandmother listed telegrams

cards letters of condolence then destroyed

or put aside the wedding photo we never saw it

and surely there was one 31 August 1920

peacetime taking hold and maybe a honeymoon
